Vegetarianism necessary for leading a spiritual life

I talk on the strength of my own experience; it won't be easy for you to believe me. Because our minds have got accustomed to demanding 'scientific proof' for everything. We manage to accept concepts like Einstein's 'spacetime' or the theories of quantum physics, even though we have never encountered (and never will encounter) these phenomena in our daily lives. Still, because tests have been made in a laboratory somewhere, and some statistics (which you can't understand) have been produced to support them, you feel compelled to believe. In fact, the greatest truths of our universe cannot be proved by science; they are beyond science. Even Einstein, and most modern quantum physicists, will agree to that!

Anyway, let me give you a scientific explanation of the advantages of vegetarianism in the spiritual life. To understand this, you must first understand something about the way the human brain works. The brain registers activity in terms of minute electric currents. When it receives information, or performs certain tasks, it generates electric currents of different frequencies or rhythms. These currents are called brain waves.

There are 4 basic kinds of brain waves, corresponding to different activities: delta waves ( produced during deep sleep), alpha waves ( produced during meditation), theta waves ( produced during periods of strong emotion) and beta waves ( produced when the frontal lobe of the brain is stimulated, during complex mathematical or analytical activity).

Alpha waves induce a feeling of peace, tranquility and relaxed concentration that is typical of meditation and even telepathy. So all meditation techniques, whether consciously or unconsciously, try to create the right conditions for the production of alpha waves in the brain. The strange thing about alpha waves is, they are produced by the brains at times when oxygen supply to the brain is low. Normally we assume that lower oxygen supply will lower brain activity. But the fact is, during low-oxygen periods the brain goes into overdrive. The blood vessels in the brain dilate to allow more blood inflow, and this creates a feeling of relaxation. Simultaneously, the brain starts producing the 'relaxing' alpha waves. So one main condition for alpha wave production is lower oxygen supply to the brain. Contrary to what we think, this doesn't affect the brain adversely in any way.

Now coming to food. Meat is highly acidic in nature, and directly increases blood acidity. To compensate for this, the lungs take in lesser carbon-dioxide ( which is also acidic) and take in more oxygen instead. So the blood reaching the brain will also have more oxygen and less carbon-dioxide. By contrast, vegetables reduce the acidity of blood. To maintain the pH balance (acid-alkali balance) in the blood, the lungs take in more acidic carbon-dioxide. So the blood reaching the brain will also have less oxygen.

This creates the perfect condition for the brain to start producing alpha waves, which help in meditation. This is also why high altitudes with lower oxygen levels (eg. the Himalayas) have been preferred by rishis (sages) since ancient times. Of course, very few people are aware of the science behind vegetarianism. You don't need to know it, you can automatically feel the difference with a vegetarian diet.

Once you start meditating regularly, your body becomes gradually refined, becomes more fit for meditation. Then, just like your body knows which food to avoid when you have a stomach upset, it will naturally drop the foods which stop you from meditating properly. But I say to you, don't force vegetarianism on yourself, even if you are going to take up meditation. If you do that, the repressed desires will grow stronger and you simply won't be able to come out of their influence. If you can drop meat without much trouble, do it.

Otherwise go ahead and enjoy it without worries or guilt. Please don't feel guilty about it! Ultimately, the guilt can cause more energy blockages in your system, it can do more harm than the meat! When your body is ready, it will drop the habit on its own.

Reasons to go Vegetarian

Vegetarian food is easy to digest
Consider making this healthy choice as one of your resolutions.
Stacks of studies confirm that a diet full of fresh/dry fruits, vegetables and grains is your best bet for living a longer, healthier and more enjoyable life. There are literally hundreds of great reasons to switch to a plant-based diet; here are 22 of the best:

Attached Image: monthly_08_2010/post-55-063796200 1282909837.jpg

1 You'll live a lot longer.
Vegetarians live about seven years longer, and vegans (who eat no animal products) about 15 years longer than meat eaters, according to a study from Loma Linda University. These findings are backed up by the China Health Project (the largest population study on diet and health to date), which found that Chinese people who eat the least amount of fat and animal products have the lowest risks of cancer, heart attack and other chronic degenerative diseases.

2 You'll save your heart. Cardiovascular disease is still the
number one killer in the United States, and the standard American diet (SAD) that's laden with saturated fat and cholesterol from meat and dairy is largely to blame. Plus, produce contains no saturated fat or cholesterol. Incidentally, cholesterol levels for vegetarians are 14 percent lower than meat eaters.

3 You can put more money in your mutual fund.
Replacing meat, chicken and fish with vegetables and fruits is estimated to cut food bills.

4 You'll reduce your risk of cancer.
Studies done at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg suggest that this is because vegetarians' immune systems are more effective in killing off tumour cells than meat eaters'. Studies have also found a plantbased diet helps protect against prostate, colon and skin cancers.

5 You'll add color to your plate.
Meat, chicken and fish tend to come in boring shades of brown and beige, but fruits and vegetables come in all colours of the rainbow. Diseasefighting phytochemicals are responsible for giving produce their rich, varied hues. So cooking by colour is a good way to ensure you re eating a variety of naturally occurring substances that boost immunity and prevent a range of illnesses.

6 You'll fit into your old jeans.
On average, vegetarians are slimmer than meat eaters, and when we diet, we keep the weight off up to seven years longer. That's because diets that are higher in vegetable proteins are much lower in fat and calories than the SAD. Vegetarians are also less likely to fall victim to weight-related disorders like heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

7 You'll give your body a spring cleaning.
Giving up meat helps purge the body of toxins (pesticides, environmental pollutants, preservatives) that overload our systems and cause illness. When people begin formal detoxification programs, their first step is to replace meats and dairy products with fruits and vegetables and juices.

8 You'll make a strong political statement.
It's a wonderful thing to be able to finish a delicious meal, knowing that no beings have suffered to make it..

9 Your meals will taste delicious.
Vegetables are endlessly interesting to cook and a joy to eat. It's an ever-changing parade of flavours and colors and textures and tastes.

10 You'll help reduce waste and air pollution.
Livestock farms creates phenomenal amounts of waste. The tons of manure, a substance that's rated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a top pollutants. And that's not even counting the methane gas released by goats, pigs and poultry (which contributes to the greenhouse effect); the ammonia gases from urine; poison gases that emanate from manure lagoons; toxic chemicals from pesticides; and exhaust from farm equipment used to raise feed for animals.

11 Your bones will last longer.
The average bone loss for a vegetarian woman at age 65 is 18 percent; for non-vegetarian women, it's double that. Researchers attribute this to the consumption of excess protein. Excess protein interferes with the absorption and retention of calcium and actually prompts the body to excrete calcium, laying the ground for the brittle bone disease osteoporosis. Animal proteins, including milk, make the blood acidic, and to balance that condition, the body pulls calcium from bones. So rather than rely on milk for calcium, vegetarians turn to dark green leafy vegetables, such as broccoli and legumes, which, calorie for calorie, are superior sources.

12 You'll help reduce famine.
It takes 15 pounds of feed to get one pound of meat. But if the grain were given directly to people, there'd be enough food to feed the entire planet. In addition, using land for animal agriculture is inefficient in terms of maximizing food production. According to the journal Soil and Water, one acre of land could produce 50,000 pounds of tomatoes, 40,000 pounds of potatoes, 30,000 pounds of carrots or just 250 pounds of beef.

13 You'll avoid toxic chemicals.
The EPA estimates that nearly 95 per cent of pesticide residue in our diet comes from meat, fish and dairy products. Fish, in particular, contain carcinogens (PCBs, DDT) and heavy metals (mercury, arsenic; lead, cadmium) that cannot be removed through cooking or freezing. Meat and dairy products are also laced with steroids and hormones.

14 You'll protect yourself from foodborne illnesses.
According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest in the US, which has stringent food standards, 25 per cent of all chicken sold in the United States carries salmonella bacteria and, the CDC estimates, 70 percent to 90 percent of chickens contain the bacteria campy-lobacter (some strains of which are antibiotic-resistan t), approximately 5 percent of cows carry the lethal strain of E. coli O157:H7 (which causes virulent diseases and death), and 30 percent of pigs slaughtered each year for food are infected with toxoplasmosis (caused by parasites).

15 You may get rid of your back problems.
Back pain appears to begin, not in the back, but in the arteries. The degeneration of discs, for instance, which leads to nerves being pinched, starts with the arteries leading to the back. Eating a plant-based diet keeps these arteries clear of cholesterol- causing blockages to help maintain a healthy back.

16 You'll be more 'regular.'
Eating a lot of vegetables necessarily means consuming fiber, which pushes waste out of the body. Meat contains no fibre. Studies done at Harvard and Brigham Women's Hospital found that people who ate a high-fiber diet had a 42 percent lower risk of diverticulitis. People who eat lower on the food chain also tend to have fewer incidences of constipation, hemorrhoids and spastic colon.

17 You'll cool those hot flashes.
Plants, grains and legumes contain phytoestrogens that are believed to balance fluctuating hormones, so vegetarian women tend to go through menopause with fewer complaints of sleep problems, hot flashes, fatigue, mood swings, weight gain, depression.......

18 You'll help to bring down the national debt.
We spend large amounts annually to treat the heart disease, cancer, obesity, and food poisoning that are byproducts of a diet heavy on animal products.

19 You'll preserve our fish population.
Because of our voracious appetite for fish, 39 per cent of the oceans' fish species are overharvested, and the Food & Agriculture Organization reports that 11 of 15 of the world's major fishing grounds have become depleted.

20 You'll help protect the purity of water.
It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce one pound of mutton, but just 25 gallons of water to produce a pound of wheat. Not only is this wasteful, but it contributes to rampant water pollution.

21 You'll provide a great role model for your kids.
If you set a good example and feed your children good food, chances are they'll live a longer and healthier life. You're also providing a market for vegetarian products and making it more likely that they'll be available for the children.

22 Going vegetarian is easy!
Vegetarian cooking has never been so simple. We live in a country that has been vegetarian by default. Our traditional dishes are loaded with the goodness of vegetarian food. Switching over it very simple indeed.

Life History Of Ramalingam

Born in 1823 near Chidambaram Tamil Nadu India Ramalingam lived the early part of his life in Chennai and settled in later Vadalur in 1867. He had a divine call in him asa representative of the earth and felt  himself an instrument of the Divine for the universal manifestation of the death-conquering Vast Grace-Light on the earth. He saw the vision of a divine evolution of the earthly life in the wake of its Manifestation. He realized the supreme and universal Divine integrally and his body became transformed and filled with Light so much so it did not cast its shadow on the ground. He eventually attained a transformed and divinised golden physical body, deathless and ever indestructible, shadow less and sleepless, and full of Light

Amrita and blissful energies and with a potential power to resurrect the dead into the bodily life. He preached deathless of body of the people and said that it was by an error they are consenting to death. After about a year or two of attaining the Deathless body, he sacrificed it by dematerialization in 1874 in the very concrete Presence of the Divine at his place in order to make the God of Vast Grace-Light manifest so as to stay on and directly rule the earth and to enable him to enter into all the physical bodies Universally.

Saint Ramalingam of Vadalur stands unique in annals of spiritual and religious history, for he not only taught a simple, down to earth, rational philosophy such as could be comprehended by the simple amongst us, but also practiced what he preached, in full public view, even as he lived and moved like any mortal in our society during the last century. Preaching the philosophy of compassion coupled with dedication and prayer to God. He demonstrated by example what man can and should achieve in this very birth, through Universal kindness and generosit

Saint Ramalingam made an incisive analysis of existing philosophies, strengthened the basic concepts and laid stress on aspects that needed the greatest emphasis in or times. Shorn of the complexities and nuances or obscure metaphysical that are beyond the understanding of the 'work a day', the teaching of Saint Ramalingam are simple and straight forward and appeal to the ordinary folks directly as being reasonable and credible.  What is more, his assertions of the feasibility of salvation for all people through the practice of compassion, right in this very birth, here and now, gave them a reassuring feeling and a new confidence in themselves which greatly attracted them to the path of Sunmarkam shown by him.

Saint Ramalingam’s revelation encompassing as it does, the old and the new, the east and the west, the past and the present, is verily and gospel of the common man, for its outreach is at once vast and varied, is couched in simple and strikingly convincing language, as though it was penned by a common man.

Unraveling the potential verities of godhead in all living creatures, Saint Ramalingam preach against dogmas and blind customs that had obscured the original jewels of wisdom immanent in early scriptures. Nevertheless his was a mission of kindness and compassion, persuasion, example rather than enforcement. There is no room for extreme enmity and quarrel, malice or disaffection in his dispensation.

The cardinal tenets of Ramalingam's teaching are enumerated here in  a brief manner :

1. There is but one God f

2. He is in the form of Supreme Grace Light and is to be worshipped in this form.  or all.

3. Worship of minor and sacrificial offering by killing animals is forbidden.

4. Meat eating is forbidden.

5. Differential treatment to persons on the basis of their different religions should be schewed.  6. Caste distinctions should be abolished.
7. Recognized the right of Universal kinship of all souls, one must treat all living creatures with loving care, holding all life as par with one's own life.

8. The path of compassion, alleviating the suffering and the hunger of the have nots' is the one and only key to salvation.

9. Mythologies and scriptures {Purana and shastaras} cannot reveal the final conclusive truth.

10. A general broad and liberal outlook is required in all matters, all round.
